HAWKS UNVEIL $10,000 MAKEOVER THAT WAS
AWARDED TO DEKALB ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL
On Thursday, December 15, the Atlanta Hawks unveiled a brand new Reading Zone at the Dekalb Alternative School, who was previously named as the winner of the Atlanta Hawks Reading Zone sponsored by Philips as part of the Hawks Read to Achieve program. The Reading Zone will become a space inside the school for students to learn while experiencing the joy of reading. Atlanta Hawks forward Marvin Williams and Area Assistant Region Superintendent, Region 3, Mr. Robert Moseley were both in attendance.
"The Atlanta Hawks organization is committed to investing in the communities where our fans live, learn, work and play," stated Bob Williams, President, Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena. "Education is an essential ingredient for success and the Reading Zone is a chance for us to provide a new channel of learning for the students of Dekalb Alternative School."
Nominations for the Reading Zone were accepted between August 2 and September 9, 2011 from organizations within 50 miles of Philips Arena that serve youth under the age of 18. The Atlanta Hawks selected Dekalb Alternative School, which currently serves 280 students from across Dekalb County, as the recipient of the $10,000 Reading Zone makeover for their supportive teaching methods, content-rich environment, small class sizes and reading program that encourages students to read a minimum of 25 books each year.
"Providing a Reading Zone is an impactful way to emphasize to students, parents, and the community that Dekalb Alternative School is indeed a school with a mission to educate students for lifelong learning," said Andrew Tatum, Principal of Dekalb Alternative School. "We desire to look the part, function in the role, and succeed in informing others of the pride we take in what we do and the selection of our school as a Hawks Reading Zone is much appreciated."
The design of the Reading Zone was provided by Gensler, a leading global architecture, design, planning, and strategic consulting firm that partners with companies to achieve measurable business and organizational goals through design.
