SMITH, HAWKS REFUSE TO LOSE
When Larry Drew called a timeout just 58 seconds into the third quarter, things did not look good for the Hawks. Playing a back-to-back out west is always a challenge, and now Atlanta was facing a double-digit deficit in the second half. It had the look of a loss, but Josh Smith had other ideas.

Smith had turned in a solid first half. In fact, he was exactly halfway to a 20 and 10 night (10 points, five rebounds), the gold-standard for forwards in the NBA. But on this night, when the Suns were keying strongly on Joe Johnson, he new 20 and 10 wouldn't be enough.

GAME NOTES

- Josh Smith had a magnificent night, willing Atlanta to a stirring second-half comeback win in Phoenix, 101-99, on Wednesday.

-- J-Smoove finished with 30 points, 17 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 3 blocks ... Willie Green was huge off the bench with a season-high 20, followed by Jeff Teague's 16 and Zaza Pachulia's 15 ... Steve Nash paced the Suns with 22 points and 16 assists.

-- After falling behind by as many as 14 in the first quarter, Atlanta stormed back to pull within two at 40-38 ... But the Suns put together another run to take a 56-47 halftime advantage, shooting 83 pct from the floor in the second period (10-12), despite committing 7 miscues ... Nash was the difference in the half, finishing with 15 pts and 8 assts.

-- Larry Drew called a timeout less than a minute into the third period, and Atlanta dropped back by 15 early in the third ... But the Hawks wouldn't go away, putting together an 8-1 run to enter the fourth down four (77-73) ... Smith (10), Green (7), Kirk Hinrich and Vladimir Radmanovic carried Atlanta home in the fourth.

-- Atlanta had lost 4 straight overall to Phoenix, 4 straight in Phoenix, and won tonight for just the third time in the last 18 meetings in Phoenix.

-- With his first offensive board of the game (in the 2nd quarter), Zaza Pachulia surpassed Moses Malone (1,021) and moved into 10th place in Hawks history.

-- Atlanta's 10-6 road mark is the third-best in the East, and fourth-best in the NBA.

-- After their first break this season of two days without a game, the Hawks resume the five-game road trip on Saturday in Portland (10:00 ET, SportSouth HD, NBA TV, 680 AM, 93.7 FM).
