News and updates from Lexington, prior to Saturday’s 6 p.m. (Central) interconference preseason matchup between Washington and New Orleans:
• Jason Smith tweeted this afternoon that he’ll be back on the floor vs. the Wizards after missing the past two games with a hip impingement: “Looking forward to getting back on the court tonight at Rupp Arena.”
• Tyreke Evans reiterated Saturday that he is being patient with his left ankle sprain, not wanting to re-injure it by coming back too quickly after hurting it Oct. 5 in Houston. With Smith returning to action Saturday, Evans and Darius Miller (foot) are the only Pelicans unavailable against the Wizards.
• Monty Williams noted in pregame that he wants New Orleans to reduce its turnovers after averaging 16.6 in its five preseason games. Specifically, the number of offensive fouls the Pelicans have accumulated while setting picks has been bothersome. “Those are the ones that stick out,” Williams said of New Orleans bigs moving while trying to screen for teammates. Williams ascribed some of the turnovers to having so many new players, a new point guard in Jrue Holiday and installing several new offensive sets.
• Williams on Anthony Davis, who’s returning to his college court at Rupp Arena tonight: “He’s worked on his game so much this summer. His ability to allow himself to be coached, but also keep his edge and hunger that he has to be a great player, if he keeps that he’s going to be as good as he wants to be.”
